From the Author

In a society where being black has negative connotations, it is vital that caregivers of black children act as buffers to the negative messages oftentimes transmitted to black children. It is the responsibility of every caregiver of black children to raise their child to be secure with and proud of his or her racial self. At the same time, it is important that caregivers help their child to understand and accept difference.

It has been proven that individuals who are comfortable with their racial selves, and accepting and understanding of those who are different, have healthy self-esteem levels, and thus, healthy psychological development.

Call Me Black Call Me Beautiful was written after considering the sparse information available on raising psychologically healthy black children. It is a book that will help parents and educators with the difficult task of
protecting black children from the negative effects of racism, discrimination and prejudice. Call Me Black Call Me Beautiful is certainly a necessary tool for healthy self-esteem development and overall positive psychological health.
