On Thursday, September 26th, 2002, and as part
of the New York Is Book Country Tie-In Program, Dr. Alicia Terry
Henderson entertained close to 100 students of a Brooklyn, New
York Public School, P.S. 279, with her new book, Call Me Black
Call Me Beautiful.
Dr. Henderson read her book and led the students in discussion
on issues of race, difference, and feelings related to these
sensitive concepts. A white student talked openly about her
experience of being the only white student in her class, and
one of a few in her entire school. A black student pointed out
the diversity present in the skin colors of several black students
in the class.
The students, teachers and librarian of P.S. 279 thanked
Dr. Henderson for visiting their school with her book. They
also invited her to come back to share with them the second
book of the Multicultural Children' s Book Series.
